What if you could see your inner world—moving, morphing, and full of color?

🌀 What Is It?

At its heart, Mind Avatar is about playful self-exploration.
The experience combines elements of art therapy, reflective journaling, and interactive installation to help people express—and witness—the many sides of who they are.

Key ingredients:

  • 🎴 Prompt cards to spark reflection

  • 🖊 Writing & drawing to externalize inner thoughts

  • ✂️ Collage-making with vibrant materials

  • 🔭 Kaleidoscope viewing to bring it all to life

  • 📸 A take-home video of their "mind avatar"

🧠 Why I Made This

I was fascinated by how art therapy uses visual expression to surface hidden feelings. But I didn’t want it to feel clinical—I wanted to make it playful, surprising, even joyful.

How might we use visual tools inspired by art therapy to help people better understand themselves?

Mind Avatar is my answer to that question.

🛠 How It Works (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Pick a Prompt

Everyone starts by drawing a card. Each one asks a question about identity, memory, or emotion—designed to nudge a little deeper thinking.

Step 2: Write or Draw Freely

No rules here. Some people doodle. Others journal. A few make abstract marks. Whatever gets it out of your head and onto paper.

Step 3: Build Your Collage

Using colorful paper, fabric scraps, stickers, magazine clippings, and string, participants build a visual world based on their reflections. This messy, expressive moment becomes the heart of the avatar.

Step 4: View Through the Kaleidoscope (with Your Phone!)

Place your collage under the kaleidoscope lens and view it using your phone’s camera. Suddenly, your personal symbols turn into a mesmerizing, moving visual—like your thoughts are dancing on screen.

Step 5: Capture, Share & Take It Home

Snap a photo or video, share it if you’d like, and keep your collage as a personal memento.

💬 What Participants Said

“Thank you so much for hosting this event. It’s incredible—so pretty, interesting, and fun to play! Just listening and exchanging stories in this group gave me so much inspiration.”

“How did you even come up with this idea? I really like it!”

💡 What I Learned

This was my first time hosting a workshop in my apartment lounge—with all strangers. Two friends helped me set up the space and prepare snacks, and to my surprise, many people showed up and were genuinely excited to join. I think the cozy setting and post-dinner timing helped.

At first, I was overwhelmed—people arrived at different times, and I had to guide each one individually. I quickly adjusted by grouping participants and setting a clear starting time with a short intro, which made the experience smoother for everyone.

What touched me most was the joy and connection the activity brought. The positive feedback was a huge encouragement for me—not only as a designer, but as a facilitator. It reminded me to trust my ideas and gave me confidence to host more in the future.
